Meet the Pigs of Eagle Eye Farm

Kune Kune pigs are native, heritage pigs of New Zealand. They were near extinction in the 1970’s. There were only an estimated 50 purebreds left in New Zealand. Two wildlife park owners in New Zealand saved the Kune Kune pigs from extinction. In 1992, the first Kune Kune pigs arrived in the UK. There were five imports of Kune Kune pigs to the US – occurring in 1996, 2005, 2010, and 2012.

Given the fact that Penelope and Wilbur - and now Waddles and Hamilton - are Kune Kune pigs, they are strict vegetarians.  They do not eat any meat.  They do not eat table scraps.  We prepare a salad for them twice a day consisting of spinach, kale, carrots, zucchini, apples, cottage cheese, and sunflower seed kernels.  Occasionally, they will get a small treat of strawberries or tomatoes.  They also get a properly balanced grain to round out their nutritional needs.  If they become too large, they can actually suffer fat blindness, so we constantly assess their weight and cut back on their food accordingly.
